G. aExploring the Sociocultural Importance of Butia eriospatha (Arecaceae), an Iconic Palm of the Highlands of Southern Brazil.h[electronic resource] c2025 aButia eriospatha is a palm species native to the highlands of southern Brazil, iconic for forming large palm groves in the frosty landscape in the winter. To investigate the cultural sig‑ nificance of Butia eriospatha, assess the distribution of knowledge, and compare it with ethnobot‑ anical data on Butia catarinensis and Butia odorata, an ethnobotanical survey was conducted with thirty-six participants (26 women and 10 men, aged 29 to 85 years) from seven municipalities. The study enabled the identification of common and contrasting elements in the relationship between communities and Butia species. Butia eriospatha proved to be a highly versatile plant, with 41 dif‑ ferent uses for food, drink production, handicrafts, utilities, landscaping, medicinal applications, and celebrations. Differences in knowledge about the use of Butia eriospatha were observed among participants, with food-related uses being more prominent among older individuals with stronger ties to rural areas, while beverage-related uses stood out among the younger, urban group. The main uses were the consumption of fresh fruit (n=36) and seed (n=26). The leaf was the part with the most uses (n=13) and was highlighted in festivities and religious celebrations. Beyond domestic uses, this species is intertwined with economic practices, popular expressions, and local territorial identity. aCultural heritage aEthnobotany aIn situ conservation aPlant genetic resources aButia eriospatha aEtnobôtanica aRecurso Genético aRecurso Natural aButiá-da-serra aButieiro aConservação in situ aEspécies negligenciadas aEspécies subutilizadas aPalmeiras aPatrimonio cultural1 aSANTOS, K.
