Studies on management and improvement of natural grazing systems have been underway since the 1980s, and the Estação Experimental de Lages (EEL; Lages Experimental Station) of the Empresa de Pesquisa Agropecuaria e Extensao Rural de Santa Catarina (Epagri) in Lages, Santa Catarina, is a key research site. Alongside different experimental and outreach activities, a long-term research project (FAPESC, Agreement 16.783 / 2011-5) was initiated at an experimental site of the EEL with the objective of describing optimal plant height targets for the management of natural grasslands dominated by the native C4 grass Andropogon lateralis (capim-caninha in Portuguese). The research relies on natural grazing systems developed by EEL, with the aim of improving the understanding of the processes of pasture development and animal production on grasslands in the region and optimizing production processes through the sustainable use of natural resources. From a production perspective, adequate management of natural grasslands and correction of soil fertility can increase pasture production three-fold and animal production five-fold as compared to traditional management practices. abiodiversity aBiodiversidade aPastagem Nativa aAtlantic Forest biome aConservative production aNative pasture1 aGARAGORRY, F.
