Southdown and polled Dorset breeds, reared under identical conditions at Sheep Breeding Farm of the division was analysed. The effect of year, sex, breed and month of the year on lamb mortality was also studied. The overall mortality was reduced from 72% in 1984 to 26% in 1986 (P < 0.01). Corriedale breed showed lower lamb mortality rates than the other two breeds (P < 0.01). Sex of lamb had no effect on the lamb deaths. The preponderances of lamb deaths were more from February to June (76%) than during rest of the months.
