L. aUtilization of waste wood pulp as roughage source in complete pelleted feeds of sheep. c1986 aAbstract: Dried waste wood pulp, a byproduct from paper manufacturing industry, was supplemented at 0, 12.5 25 and 50% levels as a roughage source in place of dry mixed grass comprising mainly Sehima nervosum and Heteropogon contortus in complete pelleted rations of sheep. The digestibilities of dry matter, organic matter, crude protein, crude fibre (P < 0.05) and ether extract (P < 0.05) increased significantly with the increased level of wood pulp in the rations. There was no significant difference in nitrogen-free extracts digestibility among 4 treatment groups. Nitrogen and calcium retentions were significantly higher among wood pulp supplemented rations. The complete rations 1, 2, 3 and 4 contained 8.43, 8.82, 9.23 and 9.70% digestible crude protein, and 54.48, 56.08, 57.95 and 59.89% total digestible nutrients respectively. The concentration of total volatile fatty acids in the rumen fluid was higher (P < 0.01) in sheep fed rations containing wood pulp than on dry mixed grass and at 4 hr post-feeding in both the rations.
