Watering every 96 h depressed extracellular fluid values on days 30 and 60; drinking every 24 and 72 h reduced the values on day 60. Dehydration significantly increased plasma free fatty acids and urea nitrogen but there was a decrease in Hb and haematocrit. There was no definite trend in plasma sodium, potassium or bicarbonate concentration during dehydration, but there were increases in urine osmolarity and conductivity and also sodium concentration. The findings indicated that lactating Chokla ewes can tolerate dehydration for 3 to 4 days during rains and mild summer in a semi-arid area. aAnimal physiology aAnimal production aBiochemistry aIndia aSemiarid zones aSheep aÁgua aDesidratação aFisiologia animal aOvino aProdução animal aResistência aNecessidade fisiológica aPhysiological requirements aSemiárido aWater requirements1 aSAHNI, K.
