Species distribution in gallery forests varies due to several environmental factors such as local topography, soil and groundwater levels. Even though these factors change in a mosaic fashion, patterns of species spatial distribution along and perpendicular to the water flow appear. Variations in density, dominance, frequency and population structure of the most common species seem to depend upon groud-water level. Differences are observed at family and species level. At the family level, Leguminosae, Lauraceae Rubiaceae and Apocynaceae are among most important in surveys of gallery forests on well drained soils and Burseraceae, Euphorbiaceae, Clusiaceae, Moraceae in swamp ones. At the species level three groups can be identified: (1) indifferents (species which can be found in both swamp and in non-swamp environments), such as Didymopanax morototoni, Protium heptaphyllum, Styrax camporum and Tapirira guianensis; (2) Preferentials (species which may occur in both environments but more frequently in one of them), such as Lamamonia ternata, Laplacea fruticosa, Pseudolmedia laevigata and Qualea dichotona; and (3) Exclusives (species which occur in only one of the environments), of non-swamp environments, such as Cheiloclinum cognatum, Copaifera langsdorfii and Vochysia tucanorum; and swamp environments, such as Calophylum brasiliense, Hediosmum brasiliense and Richeria grandis. Floristic and environmental paterns seem to support the characterization of two sub-types of gallery forests of the Brazilian Cerrado: the swamp and non-swamp gallery forest.
