Bradyrhizobium japonicum strains were exposed to AL in solid defined media and in soil solutions from acid soils extracted by H2O or 0.01 M CaCl2. Residual effects of these exposures to Al were evaluated by tolerance and survival in media with Al, sensitivity to antibiotics, nodulation ability and N2 fixation effectiveness. B. japonicum strains showed variation in their original tolerance to Al. Direct effects of Al reduced the rate of growth or even stopped the growth. There were no residual effects of Al on the original tolerance to Al, on the survival in media with Al, on the sensitivity to the antibiotics kanamycin and rifampicin and, on the nodulation ability and N2 fixation effectiveness. Exposure of B. japonicum strains to Al in soil solution did not alter tolerance to Al and sensitivity to the antibiotics kanamycin and rifampicin but Mn caused a residual inhibitory effect on the survival in media with Al even when the strains were subcultured in media without Mn. Residual effects of exposing B. japonicum strains to Mn in soil solutions were observed for N2 fixation of soyabean plants. For strain 3ib/143 the N yield was reduced, SEMIA 587 was not affected and for SEMIA 5073 shoot dry weight, N yield and nodulation were increased. It is clear that high concentrations of Al and Mn have a range of effects on B. japonicum in terms of growth and survival and N2 fixation by soyabean. Al caused direct effects on growth which may effect the N2 fixation of soyabean. Mn, besides having a direct effect on growth, ...
