Biological filters make use of relatively thin layers of microorganisms adhered to a suitable support, over which the effluent streasm along. It is particularly indicated for no-flocculating microorganisms, like nitrifying bacteria, easily entrained from processes using suspendede cells. The purpose of this work was to evaluate preliminary a hybrid fluidized bed - air lift system, in treating a petroleum refinery effluent, originally containing about 30 mg/L of residual ammoniacal-N. two types of supporting materials were tested: activated carbon particles and polystyrene beads, both with mean size 2mm. The reactor had a colume of 5L and was provided with an internal draft tube. The associated mean residence time was 10h. The process performance was evaluated by measurint the concentrations of ammoniacal-N, nitrite-N and DO, in accordance with procedures recommended by the standard methods. The biolfilm development was monitores via culture isolation on solid medium and photography under electronic and/or optical microscope. Activated carbon particles have shown the best results, leading to a removal of ammonia to an extent around 85%. The best performance of activated carbon as compared to polystyrene, was clearly related to an stronger attachment and homogeneity of the biofilm covering the relatively rougher surface of the coal particles. |
