REPORTS on the radiographic diagnosis of pregnancy in sheep have been cited by Ford, Clark and Gallup (1). These workers concluded that the numbers of lambs in utero in Clun Forest ewes can be determined with an accuracy of 90% or more by an experienced radiologist, provided the animals are examined later than the 90th day of gestation. With smaller breeds of sheep they suggest a probability of accuracy approaching 100%. No information is available on the use of radiographs for the detection of fetal numbers in goats. During the course of experiments on frozen goat semen, it became evident that a procedure for the detection of early pregnancy was desirable. As well, for work on estrus control in goats it was of interest to diagnose pregnancy at an early date and to determine the number of fetuses. During the course of these experiments all does (Saanen and Toggenburg breeding) were radiographed to determine the earliest date after breeding for accurate diagnosis of pregnancy and fetal numbers. The details of the technique and the results during four breeding seasons are presented. |
