Insect invasions of new territories cause problems globally for agriculture. The Mediterranean fruit fly, Ceratitis capitata, is a polyphagous, multivoltine tropical species that has greatly expanded its geographic distribution from its native origin. The first detections of C. capitata in the Neotropical region were recorded in South America, followed by several locations in Central America. Here, we review the historical invasion of Medfly in the Neotropics, discussing possible invasion pathways and the biological and economic aspects that support its successful invasions. We highlighted the prevention and management strategies for this pest and discussed the perspective for public policies covering bio-invasions in the region. |
