The Pantanal region is the world's largest floodplain area and has a great biological importance due to its unique flora and fauna. This area has undergone intense anthropogenic activities including the use of agrochemicals, the release of non-treated sewage water into its rivers and the mercury contamination. Mercury is an important pollutant because it is considered one of the most toxic metals, especially as methyl mercury. |
