The development of sheep breeding in the Federal District, Brazil is a reality. The farms are dedicated to the production of meat, using mainly hair sheep of the Santa Inês breed. In this region there is little information on the potential of these animals, which is necessary for the implantation of a breeding scheme. It is known that factors such as the number of animals Born per year have a strong influence on the economic viability of this activity, because more animals means a greater selection intensity and a greater number of animals for sale. The study of genetic and environmental variance components is important as they will help in the definition of the selection program, as the response obtained to selection will depend on the variance of the traits involved. The objective of this work is to estimate variance components for birth weight of Santa Inês sheep on one farm in the Federal District, Brazil. |
