Cashew nut testa shell (CNTS) is a plentiful by-product of cashew nut processing and is rich in bioactive compounds useful for the food, chemical, and pharmaceutical industries. The aim is to extract these compounds in an eco-friendly manner using GRAS (generally recognized as safe) solvents and energy-efficient processes to minimize the environmental impact and promote sustainability. Microwave- and ultrasound-assisted extractions (MAE and UAE, respectively) were explored for this purpose, and optimized by Box‒Behnken design (BBD). The extraction yield values; the quality of the extracts in terms of total contents of phenolics, flavonoids, and carotenoids; and the antioxidant capacity (by FRAP and DPPH assays) were evaluated. The chemical profile of the extract was analyzed by ultra-performance liquid chromatography (UPLC), for a sample recovered at optimal conditions determined by the desirability function. The inhibitory effect of the extracts on digestive enzymes α-amylase and α-glucosidase was tested. The regression analysis confirmed the accuracy of the models in assessing interaction parameters (adjustment p < 0.05 and adequacy R2 > 0.9). Catechin, epicatechin, and procyanidins were the main compounds from the extracts obtained at optimized conditions, for MAE and UAE. The extracts effectively inhibited the digestive enzymes α-amylase and α-glucosidase, indicating potential health benefits. MAE and UAE were considered ecologically green by the green certificate (A). Overall, CNTS extracts exhibit strong antioxidant capacity and digestive enzyme inhibition, contributing to its use as natural food preservatives or as functional or nutraceutical ingredient, reducing the risk of chronic diseases. Besides, the use of environmentally friendly methods provides sustainable and health-promoting applications.
