The anthelmintic efficacy of diamphenethide given at 100 mg per kg against one and 3-week-old Fasciola hepatica injections, produced in goats by the administration of 200 cysts was found to be 84% and 97% respectively. Anthelmintic activity could be detected 2 weeks after dosing by a lowering of the sorbitol and glutamate dehydrogenase activity in the plasma compared with control groups. The progressive increase seen in the plasma enzyme activity during the course of infection appeared to be associated with the migration of the living parasite through the liver parenchyma because this increase stopped abruptly and returned to normal when a 3-week-old infection was terminated. The progressive liver damage seen in an infection could be monitored in individual goats by measuring plasma enzyme concentrations. The effect of a more severe infection on the plasma enzyme activity, blood picture, weight gain and faecal egg count was examined by using a group of goats infected with 1000 cysts. |
