This study investigated the pupal diapause of Heliothinae pests (H. armigera, H. zea, and C. virescens) in the Brazilian Savanna (Cerrado) (15°S) during the dry season. High diapause rates were observed: 73.7% for H. armigera, 36.6% for H. zea, and 81.5% for C. virescens. The key factor for breaking diapause was the addition of water to the vermiculite (after 60 to 120 days), mimicking the rainy season onset. Without added water, some pupae survived for up to 240 days. Understanding this mechanism, especially moisture-induced diapause termination, is vital for the sustainable management and resistance management of insecticides, by targeting pest populations that emerge at the start of the rainy season. |
