The goat as an experimental animal can and is making valuable contributions to science. Compared with the laboratory dog they are cheaper, easier to maintain, larger, more hardy and are at leaste as pleasant and affectionate to work with. The supply of goats suitable for research is not good and therefore the establishment of a breeding herd is justified. There are true pigmy breeds of goat should smaller animals be required. At present such animals are not readily available and initial costs would be high. This paper shows that with good management and sensible husbandry healthy goats can be produced and a herd maintained. |
