The present work discusses the impact of gene discovery for crop legume breeding and biotechnological purposes regarding tolerance to drought and salinity on agricultural production. A huge amount of data has been generated by different projects, whereas important gene candidates may be recognized in both native and cultivated plants, especially based on the knowledge available for model organisms. Two Brazilian initiatives have generated significant amounts of data: the NordEST network (Cowpea Genome Consortium) and the GENOSOJA project (Soybean Genome Consortium). Both initiatives generated more than 100 million of expressed tags, with focus on biotic and abiotic defense mechanisms revealing important profiles and candidates based on high throughput differential expression profiling, demanding creative annotation and curation methods besides the construction of a bridge to effective breeding policies and transference to other legume crops. Among important gene groups considered, some will be highlighted, as transcription factors, signal transduction (with emphasis on kinases) but also important classes including water channel proteins and membrane sensors and transporters. Time frame experiments have shown that not only the sequence of important genes, but also the velocity of perception and signal transduction have been crucial for the definition of the tolerance or sensitivity of such abiotic stresses. |
