Abstract Ecosystem accounting systematically assesses the contributions of ecosystems to human well being, such as food provisioning, water purification, and carbon sequestration, to help policymakers consider the value of ecosystems for the benefit of present and future generations. The System of Environmental-Economic Accounting—Ecosystem Accounting (SEEA-EA) is a standard for national and subnational ecosystem accounting developed by the United Nations (UN) and published as the official system for ecosystem accounting reporting of UN member countries to allow comparing changes in the extension and condition of ecosystems at the national or subnational level. For that, SEEA-EA uses the Ecosystem Functional Groups (EFG) of the IUCN (International Union for Conservation of Nature) Global Ecosystem Typology. This paper reviews recent literature on vegetation and habitat typologies for the Pantanal, the world’s largest tropical wetland. The Pantanal’s main economic activities are extensive cattle ranching and fishing, which are dependent on the ecosystem services of providing forage and fish resources. The Pantanal has an annual dynamic that stores water during the rainy season and gradually releases it, making it difficult to define ecosystem typologies. We investigate proxies for an ecosystem typology that could comply with EFG while being representative of the Pantanal ecosystems at a level adequate for national and subnational ecosystems accounting for the Pantanal conservation policy making using SEEA-EA. We found out that the Brazilian Vegetation Classification System and a wetland habitat typology specifically developed for Pantanal are the two most relevant in the literature for the Pantanal. Both could be easily adapted to match EFG, enabling SEEA-EA for the Pantanal.
