Abstract: This study evaluated the effect of the substrate:inoculum ratio and digestate recirculation conditions on the biogas and methane yield, free ammonia concentration and solid phase agronomic quality (after treatment) of poultry litter solid state anaerobic digestion (SSAD). Experimental tests were conducted using a central composite design (2²), with four trials at the factorial points and three at the central points, using poultry litter as substrate that was collected after 12 cycles of broiler production [TS 76% (w.w−1 )]. Three laboratory-scale reactors containing 3 kg of poultry litter each were operated at mesophilic conditions (37◦C) and seven experimental runs were performed at retention time of 30 days each. There were three substrate:inoculum ratios (1:1; 1:1.66, and 1:3) and three daily recirculation intervals (2, 3, and 4 times per day), and each recirculation event lasted 15 min. The highest biogas and methane yields were183 LNbiogas.kg−1 VSadd and 74 LNmethane.kg−1 VSadd, respectively, and they were obtained at the substrate:inoculum ratio of 1:3 with a digestate recirculation frequency of four times a day. Digestate recirculation was the variable that influenced the concentration of free ammonia; the most frequently recirculated tests had lower concentrations (below 60 mgNH3.L−1 ). After the SSAD process, we identified a transfer of nutrients (N, P, K) from the solid phase to the liquid phase. The nutrient concentrations in the solid phase (Nout = 11 g.kg−1 , Kout = 5 g.kg−1 , and Pout = 7 g.kg−1 ) indicated that the digested poultry litter still has potential for use in fertilization. In this study, it was estimated that 90 m3 biogas.tons−1 poultrylitter was generated using SSAD. Whereas 100 tons of poultry litter are produced after 12 production cycles, the biogas generation capacity reaches 9,000 m3 /year. In this scenario, farmers can use biogas from poultry litter SSAD as an additional source of energy. Resumo: Este estudo avaliou o efeito do substrato: razão de inóculo e condições de recirculação digestiva na produção de biogás e metano, na concentração de amônia livre e na qualidade agronômica em fase sólida (após tratamento) da digestão anaeróbia em estado sólido de frangos de corte (SSAD). Testes experimentais foram conduzidos utilizando um delineamento composto central (2²), com quatro ensaios nos pontos fatoriais e três nos pontos centrais, utilizando cama de frango como substrato que foi coletado após 12 ciclos de produção de frangos [TS 76% (ww − 1) ]. Três reatores em escala laboratorial contendo 3 kg de cama de frango foram operados em condições mesofílicas (37◦C) e sete séries experimentais foram realizadas no período de retenção de 30 dias cada. Houve três substratos: razão de inóculo (1: 1; 1: 1,66 e 1: 3) e três intervalos diários de recirculação (2, 3 e 4 vezes ao dia), e cada evento de recirculação durou 15 min. As maiores produções de biogás e metano foram183 LNbiogas.kg − 1 VSadd e 74 LNmethane.kg − 1 VSadd, respectivamente, e foram obtidas na relação substrato: inóculo de 1: 3 com freqüência de recirculação digestiva de quatro vezes ao dia. A recirculação digestiva foi a variável que influenciou a concentração de amônia livre; os testes recirculados mais frequentemente tiveram concentrações menores (abaixo de 60 mgNH3.L − 1). Após o processo de SSAD, identificamos uma transferência de nutrientes (N, P, K) da fase sólida para a fase líquida. As concentrações de nutrientes na fase sólida (Nout = 11 g.kg − 1, Kout = 5 g.kg − 1, e Pout = 7 g.kg − 1) indicaram que a cama de frango digerida ainda tem potencial para uso na fertilização. Neste estudo, estimou-se que 90 m3 biogás.tons-1 de poultrylitter foram gerados usando SSAD. Enquanto 100 toneladas de cama de frango são produzidas após 12 ciclos de produção, a capacidade de geração de biogás alcança 9.000 m3 / ano. Neste cenário, os agricultores podem usar o biogás da SSAD da cama de frango como fonte adicional de energia.
