The land area of the Philippines devoted to coconut is about 2.52 million hectares. It has been reported that close to one-third of our population is directly or indirectly dependent upon coconuts for their livelihood. It is disheartening, however, to accept the fact that despite the vital role of the coconut industry in the philippine economy, our average nut production per tree is among the lowest in them coconut-growing countries of the world (table I). Although the contribution of the coconut industry to the Philippine economy is sizable in terms of its dollar earnings, the proportion of people dependent on the industry and the croplands devoted to coconut, the net income from coconut farming is still considerable low (tableII). |
