Data collected during 336 hr. of observation with ten Zebu cattle were examined to asses the extent of variation between these animals and the extent to which these animals conform to the general herd behaviour. A further use was made of the data to discuss the effects of individual animal behaviour on the numbers of animals it is necessary to observe. It is concluded that the ten animals used are definite individuals, but at the same time behave as a herd. Considering the grazing and ruminating habits only the following variations occurred:
(1) Averaging the results over 8 and 6 days respectively on two different paddocks the range from the highest to the lowest time for the habits was less than 10%.
(2) On any one day the results for one animal were less than 15% above or below the herd mean; the majority of the differences being less than 5%.
(3) The actual patterns of behaviour for the animals are similar on any particular day.
(4) The possible accuracy of a behaviour study is reduced considerably if less than four animals are used. Above this number the increase in accuracy is probably proportional to the number of extra animals observed. |
