Soybean (Glycine max) is probably the only crop under continuous expansion, especially in nontraditional countries. This expansion is invariably characterized by few years of healthy soybeans, with increasing yield, and followed by sudden disease outbreaks. Integrated disease management (IDM), involving crop rotation/sucession, genetic resistance, soil management, fungicide foliar and seed treatment, and time of planting, is essential for increasing and maintaining high yield. But conditions of world soybean production are so diverse that the potential for adoption of IDM depends upon many factors that will be discussed: types of diseases, availability and stability of resistant genes, climatic and soil conditions, diversity and economics of alternative crops, the farm sizes, and a reliable research and extension services. |
