In this work 28 banana genotypes with different ploidy levels were evaluated for the resistance to Panama disease (Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. cubense - FOC). Ten plants of each genotype were planted in an area naturally infested by FOC using a totally randomized design. As susceptibility control, plants of the variety Maça ('Silk') were planted between each individual. Disease severity was assessed by mean of scale ranging from 0 to 4 (0: healthy plant and 4: dead plant). Most of he 'Maçã' plants (92%) showed symptoms of the disease evidencing a high inoculum pressure in the area. Regardless of ploidy levels, highly resistant genotypes were identified. Most of the diploid genotypes were classified as resistant. Among them, NBA-14 (AA) was highlighted, since produces comercial fruits with high carotenoids contents. Comercial tri- and tetraploid hybrids, such as PA9401 (AAB) and FHIA-02 (AAAA), respectively, were also ranked as resistant. These genotypes are promising for direct cultivar selection, introgression of resistance alleles in susceptible genotypes, as well as to elucidate the genetics basis of resistance to Panama disease in banana. |

Water availability is the major driver of tropical forest structure and dynamics. Most research has focused on the impacts of climatic water availability, whereas remarkably little is known about the influence of water table depth and excess soil water on forest processes. Nevertheless, given that plants take up water from the soil, the impacts of climatic water supply on plants are likely to be modulated by soil water condition |
