Cassava mosaic disease (CMD) in Africa has been related to two distinct virus specie, African cassava mosaic virus (ACMV) and East African cassava mosaic virus (EACMV). In 1988, a severe epidemic of CMD associated with a recombinant virus occurred in Uganda. The recombination event was therefore assumed to be the cause of the epidemic outbreak. Recently, very severe CMD symptoms were also observed in the Ivory Coast on cassava plants growing in fields bordering the capital, Abidjan. Polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and mechanical transmission were used to determine the molecular variability of cassava geminiviruses occurring in these countries. This study reports the biodiversity of cassava geminiviruses and the emergence of new germiniviruses in Africa: the recombinant EACMV/Ug is widespread in Uganda, whereas ACMV is confined to some regions. |
