The phytoseiid mite Amblyseius manihoti Moraes, n.sp. is one of the most common predators associated with the cassava green mite, Mononychellus tanajoa (Bondar), in Northeastern Brazil. Previous observations conducted on cassava (Manihot esculenta Crantz) fields in Cruz das Almas,State of Bahia, indicated that A. manihoti is the most abundant on the Olho Roxo than on other varieties commonly cultivated in that region. The objective of this study was to evaluate possible reasons for the apparent preference of A. manihoti for the Olho Roxo. The study of biology of A. manihoti on M. tanajoa was conducted using four cassava varieties:Olho Roxo, Riqueza, Cigana Preta and Cidade Rica. The duration of the immature stages of A. manihoti was similar on all varieties (ca. 5.2 days from egg to adult in F1 and F2 generations). The average daily oviposition rate was also similar on all varieties (ca. 2. 6 and 2. 4 eggs per female per day in F1 and F2 generations). Studies under laboratory conditions did not present evidence which supported that the phytoseiid apparent preference were related with morphologic and/or physiologic characteristics of the host. Riqueza and Cigana Preta varieties were the most adequated for the development of A. manihoti on which this predator showed higher net reproductive rate. |
