Effects of two different host plants, potato, Solanum tuberosum, and tomato, Lycopersicon esculentum, on specific life history characteristics of the predator Podisus maculiventris (Say) (Heteroptera: Pentatomidae) were investigated. Prey in this study were 3rd intar, Colorado potato beetle Leptinotarsa decemlineata (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae). Without access to prey, survivorship was initially higher for predators provided potato or tomato plants than for predators provided water. However no difference in survivorship was detected after the 35th day of life. Predators provided host plants lived up to 50 days, and predators water lived up to 60 days. Predators provided host plants, lost weight initially but then maintained a low weight throughout the remainder of their lives. Predators provided no food lost weight continually until death. Predators fed prey under low prey inputs (less than one prey/day) survived but decreased reproduction regardless of the host plant which L. decemlineata fed upon. Predators fed at longer intervals, laid fewer egg clutches, had fewer ovipositions per day, decreased body weight, and laid eggs later in life than predators fed prey more frequently. My results support the concept of a life history trade-off between survival and reproduction when the predator is fed under low prey inputs. This trade-off was not affected by host plant which prey fed upon in this study. A trade-off between survival and reproduction is consistent with previous studies with this predator, and may help ...
