The Pantanal is a large wetland with an area of 140.000 km2, located in the centre of South America. Its rich fauna contain 80 species of mammals and the coatis (Nasua nasua) have been the most frequenty observed species during the day. Trypanosoma evansi can infect a broad of mammals. T.evansi is the causative agent of Surra in the Old World and "Mal de Caderas" in the subtropical areas of Argentina and Pantanal, Brazil. The "Mal de caderas" has been a significant limitation to the introduction and breeding of horses in the Pantanal. The outbreaks are related to the vector season. Studies showed that the vector season occurs in the first half of the rainy season, from september/october to december/january. This season represents the period of major risk of trypanosome transmission by these insects due their abundance and population peak. Tabanus importunus, is the most abundant and important species throughoutthe rainy season. After this season usually no cases of trypanosomosis are observed in horses. The aim of this research was to determine the importance of coatis as a source of parasites during the low vector season. Seven coatis belonging to three bands and a solitary female were caught on three ranches: R1, R2 and R3 with 3, 2 and 3 animals, respectively. The coatis were physically restrained and injected intramusculary with 0,01 ml/kg of acepromazina (Acepran 1% Univest S.A., Sao Paulo, Brazil). The animals were bled by cardiac puncture using a vacuum system (Vacuum II, Labnew, Campinas, Brazil). The diagnosis was made using the microhematocrit centrifuge test and inoculation in rats and mice. Blood from each sample and the concentrated parasites in the buffy coat of micro hematocrit tubes were also used to prepare thin smears. The trypanosomes were identified based on morphological and biometrical data. All animals belonging to R1 and R2 were infected (62,5%). An adult male from R2 presented 106.35 x 10 6 parasites/ml. This animal presented anemia characterized by low erythrocite count (2.75 x 10 6/ml) and decreased hematocrit (22%). The 5 primary isolates obtained from infected coatis were cryopreserved at -196 oC in nitrogen liquid and designed as NN1 to NN5. These data are indicative of the importance of coatis as a wild reservoir during the low vector season and the importance of the parasite as cousing disease in wild animals.
