The objective of this research is to define on a regional scale the wetland habitats of each of the hydrological subregions of the Pantanal, thus producing a final product covering the entire Pantanal, using fine spatial resolution (50 m) SAR imagery from ALOS/PALSAR and RADARSAT-2, a comprehensive set of ground reference data, and employing a hierarchical object-oriented approach. The combined classification of ten land cover classes for the entire Pantanal was achieved with an overall accuracy of 80%. Overall, the primary sources of error for this classification were due to 1) similarities in vegetation structure and/or inundation regime, and thus similar backscattering characteristics; and 2) issues of the scale of the image objects in regards to the heterogeneity of the landscape and the habitats within it. This map provides spatial information on hydrology and vegetation that is unprecedented in its detail for the entire Pantanal region. O objetivo deste trabalho foi definir em uma escala regional os habitates de cada sub-região do Pantanal, produzindo uma classificação que cobre o Pantanal inteiro, usando dados de alta resolução do ALOS/PALSAR e RADARSAT-2, dados de referência de campo, e classificação orientada a objeto. A classificação de 10 classes para o Pantanal inteiro resultou em uma acurácia de 80%. De uma forma geral, as fontes de erro da classificação foram: 1) classes com vegetação similares, resultando em retroespalhamento semelhantes, 2) a relação entre a resolução espacial (50 m) das imagens e heterogeneidade espacial dos habitats. O mapa produzido fornece infromação espacial com um nível de detalhamento sem precedentes sobre a hidrologia e vegetação para toda a região Pantanal.
