Kramer (1988) and Passioura (1988) highlight an important principle in plant physiology, namely that roots affect the activity of shoots. It is safe to say that anyone who has observed plants could cite many examples. What is in contention, however, is the interpretation of the water potential after some investigators (Bates & Hall, 1981; Blackman & Davies, 1985; Eavis & Taylor, 1979; Gollan, Passioura & Munns, 1986; Termaat, Passioura & Munns, 1985 Turner, Schulze Gollan, 1985) observed that roots in water deficient media can affect shoot physiology in ways not involving the of the shoot. |
