The Santa Inês is a breed of American Hair sheep found in Brazil. It is generally thought to be a cross of Morada Nova, the course-wooled Italian breed, Bergamasca, and the native coarse-wooled Crioula followed by a period of selection for absence of fleece. The Santa Inês also resembles the Sahelian types of hair sheep from the arid regions of west Africa. Their colors range from red, black and white and can be spotted or solid, showing a lack of genetic homogeneity of this breed, which is still in formation. This study aims to estimate environmental effects on production and reproduction traits for Morada Nova, Santa Inês and their crossbreds in Central Brazil. There is a need to determine the genetic structure of the Santa Inês before the closure of the herd book as its dominance of the hair breed meat market may be due to a large degree of heterosis due to the fact that it is still in formation. |
