The results presented here indicate that A. cassiae can effectively control sicklepod seedlings growing in diverse environmental conditions and soil types of the Southeastern United States. In general, the fungus performed better than a chemical control, toxaphene, used for comparison, because in many instances there was secondary infection which killed or stunted sicklepod seedlings that emerged after treatments were applied. The fungus therefore aooears to be an excellent biological control agent and an ideal mycoherbicide candidate. Further research should be directed to find ways to reduce the amount of inoculum needed for control and to evaluate possible interactions of A. cassiae with chemcical pesticides, particularly with postemergence herbicides. Attempts are underway to develop commercial mycoherbicide product(s) of A. cassiae by Mycogen Corporation, California, and Abbott Laboratories, Illinois. |
