Most aspects of an insect's life, such as behavior, physiology, and ecology are inserted within the context of nutrition. Nutritional ecology includes studies on changes in behavior and physiology, as an answer to a variable environment (biotic and abiotic) in order to reach an ideal life history performance. Within this broad scope the seed-sucking guild of insects associated with soybean [Glycine max (L.) Merrill] will be analyzed. Chemical (e.g., nutrients, water, allelochemicals) and physical (e.g., seed hardness, pod pilosity, seed size) characteristics of soybean and of alternate host plants have a variable impact to nymph/adult performance. In addition, switch in food from nymph to adult may or may not improve reproduction. Potential tactics related to feeding habits, such as use of early planted/early maturity varieties or preferred host plants as traps, in conjunction with release of egg parasitoids and supplementation of feeding atractants, and manipulation of overwintering host plants to manage seed-suckers will be discussed. Finally, suggestions for future research within the scope of insect nutritional ecology will be made. |
