An artificial ecosystem is a self-contained environment populated by independent entities representating some level of organization. Agents implement levels of abstraction representing entities in a system. Agents can also explore parallelism and cooperative work. Artificial ecosystems can thus be implemented using agents, where a global pattern is not coded in the agents specifications, but is a result of their interactions. The Java language provides parallel threads of control and runs in a number of very distinct hardware architectures. As such, in this paper we illustrate the suitability of Java to implment artificial ecosystems using the artificial ecosystems paradigm. |
