A growing number of farmers has been interested by the Pantanal horses race and this is when the equine infectious anemia becomes a major obstacle to regional horse breeding. The study aimed to evaluate whether the positive horses for EIA have lower physical performance compared to negative animals to obtain data to create awareness among farmers of the need to control the EIA in the Pantanal. We used 16 male horses of Pantanal race, between 10 and 18 years, with 8 negative horses (Group 1) and 8 positive (Group 2). They were kept in two nearby farms in the Pantanal Nhecolândia region, where they were released on native pasture with mineral salt and water ad libitum. Before and after 42 days of training, two tests of progressive effort were conducted, developed in flat track, grassy with 1.500m, where a single rider using GPS, toured with the animals at the trot, extended trot, collected canter and extended canter, and the end of each stage were monitored heart rate (FC) and blood lactate concentration (La) and when they reached La> 4 mmol and FC> 150btm the test was stopped. The animals worked on alternate days for 1 h in step and canter, with canter speed corresponding to 70% of FC obtained during the first test. In the second test the distance traveled (km) by Group 1 was higher (p <0.05) than the Group 2, which shows that EIA-negative has superior physical performance when compared to the EIA-positive. |
