Land use systems adapted to the nutrient limited growth conditions of the terra firme must possess the ability to utilize available resources as efficiently as possible and to avoid unproductive losses, eg., through leaching. In this study, water and nutrient fluxes in different perennial land use systems, either monocultres of mixed systems, as well as primary and secondary forest are compared in order to determine the preconditions for resource efficiency in natural and anthropogenic perennial vegetation. It is hypothesized that water and nutrient utilization depend on specific properties of systems components and, in mixed systems, interactions between species. An aim of this study is to define the functional role that some important species play in the systems under investigation and to utilize this knowledge for designing optimum land use systems for this site. The analysis of the small-scale variability of water and nutrient fluxes in the different systems is an important tool for this. Measurements include water and nutrient input with rain, throughfall and stem flow as well as leaching and transpiration of trees and undergrowth. |
