The AI scheme operated in France is described. Following the training of ? goats to ejaculate into an artificial vagina, semen is collected twice weekly in a series of 15 ejaculates per ?. Ejaculates of <0.2 ml and with a sperm concentration of <1.0 × 109/ml are discarded. Spermatozoa from the remaining ejaculates are washed twice before dilution and freezing, and the semen doses are evaluated for sperm motility after thawing. Males which rank in the bottom third of the group for the production of insemination doses are eliminated from the scheme. For ?? which remained in the scheme and for the discarded ??, the production of insemination doses averaged 9.4 and 4.1 resp. The ?? are further evaluated for CR of inseminated does 22 days after AI, kidding rate and the number of pregnancies discontinued after the 22nd day. The ?? included in the scheme are synchronized using FGA and PMSG. The CR to 1st insemination was 63% for intrauterine insemination vs. 53 for intracervical insemination. When hormonal treatment was supplemented by the use of PGF2?, the CR to 1st insemination increased to 68%. Pregnancy diagnosis included in the scheme is based on progesterone concentration in blood serum 22 days after AI: ?? with >1.0 ng/ml are considered pregnant. The testing is done within a 6-day period, allowing the farmer to induce a 2nd oestrus and to re-inseminate non-pregnant ?? 4 wk after the original AI. |
