Historically there have been various types of collections of plant species, some for their beauty, some for their uniqueness, and otheir utilitarian value. Live specimens, either whole or as plant parts, have, been gathered often at great risk to the collector, frequently to satisfy scientific curiosity, and often moved long distance. These found their way into botanical gardens, arboreta, and public and privat collections (Plucknett et al., 1987). Souch collections, especially in the United States, have been vital to agricultural development and are the foundation of modern programs in crop breeding and development. Long before the advent of scientific plant breeding, farmes, garderners, horticulturists, botanists, and others made selections and otherwise developed new forms that were more useful than their progenitors. With the advent of scientific plant breeding, the notion of having a wider assortment (variation) of types within the species resulted in the expansion and more systematic acquisition of plant germplasm. |
