Operational plain. Aim. To provide a reliable scientific basis of ecosystem functioning and natural responses or detection of pertubations to the hidrologic period for sustainable management of aquatic/terrestrial ecosystem of the Mogi Guacu River Basin. This, together with an environmental monitoring stations, should lead to the baseline measurements required for ecosystems analysis programs at Jatai Ecological Station. Strategy. The Jatai Project includes a multidisciplinary core of strategy, medium to long term research projects. To obtain this information we must have continuing knowledge of the Jatai Ecological Station natural areas as a baseline against wich to measure the effects of modification. It was proposed that relatively undistrubed ecosystems form the basic research tool for the establishment of such baselines. Thus, there is a need for a comprehensive natural ecosystems (Jatai Ecological Statio) to preserve, manage and catalogue for use, the full range of natural area types. This annual report, the second of Jatai Project, initiates a new approach to the presentation of this full report, wich is intended for widespread distribution to potential users of this research program and to organizations and people that interact significantly with the Jatai Project multidisciplinary group researchers. Research: the structure of research programs. Research at the Jatai Project is organized into three interrelated research programs: limnology; biogeochemistry; Ecological, cultural and social-economic ecosystem evaluation each focussed into several core projects. Each core consists of strategic research that is supported by short or long term projects, completely funded from external source (CNPq) and have applied nature. These projects has been selected because it was considered to be of critical importance to the sustainable management of the Jatai Ecological Station natural areas. The potential scope of the Jatai Project is extremely dependent of the Programa de Pos Graduacao em Ecologia e Recursos Naturais / Universidade Federal de Sao Carlos, to obtain staff personnel at various stages degress to realize the research work established in each project and to work collaboratevely with scientists at other research institutions. Relationships between the research programs and projetcs are set out in Diagrams 1 and 2. These diagrams give a visual expression to the Jatai Project Operational Plan with is proceded this report.
