The extremely low cation exchange capacity of the Oxisol of the Cerrado region in central Brazil, together with high permeability of the soils and intense rainfall during the growing season, make the system very vulnerable to the leaching of cations, mainly potassium. Many practices have been attempted to improve the management of the nutrient which is mainly applied as a soluble potassium chloride. Liming has proven to be very efficient in reducing leaching, but other alternatives have been researched. Very recently, a product obtained by the alkaline hydrotermal treatment of potassium feldspars was proposed as an alternative source of the nutrient. The material is claimed to have the characteristics of a slow release source, which could make it of considerable value from the point of view of controlling leaching, improving the plant use efficiency of the nutrient, and keeping a more constant level of the nutrient, and keeping a more constant level of the nutrient in the soi due to a longer lasting effect. In addition, it would ease costs of import of potassium chloride since Brazil is still dependent on external acquisition to satisfy its internal demand for the fertilizer. Two samples of the hydrothermally treated material were analyzed and compared with the original potash rock. The alkaline hydrothermal treatment resulted in a crystalline phase not soluble in water, but soluble in two percent citric acid solultion. The rate of potassium relase was very fast in a pH 5.5 buffered citrate-citric......
