Study carried out on a highly weathered and aggregated Xanthic Ferralsol with a low cation exchange capacity on the gerra firme near Manaus-AM (Brasil) to investigate the nitrogen dynamics and the fate of applied nitrogen fertilizer in the soil-plnat system of a mixed cropping system consisting of Bactris gasipaes Kunth. (peachpalm, arecaceae), Theobroma grandiflorum (Willd. ex Spreng.) K. Schu. (cupuacu, Sterculiaceae), Bertholletia excelsa Humb. & Bpnpl. (Brazil nut, Lecythidaceae) and Bixa orellana L. (annato, Bixaceae). Annato, cupuacu and peachpalm seemed to take up more than 90% of the incorporated nitrogen fertilizer under their oyn canopy. However, Brazil nut took up more than 70% of the fertilized nitrogen from the fertilized areas under the canopies of the neighboring trees (peachpalm: 40%, annato: 36%, cupuacu: 6%). Furthermore, peachpalm and Brazil nut were better able than the other two trees in reducing nutrient leaching due to their deep root system. They took up nitrogen from the subsoil nitrogen pool, which was found under all investigated species as a result of leached fertilizer. |

Pantaneiro horses are a breed native to flood plains of Brazil, where they thrive with little fuman interference. The aims of this study were to characterize age-associated changes in testicular size, serum testosterone and sexual behavior and to determine age at puberty as well as to evaluate daily sperm production in the Pantaneiro stallion. After weaning the males were kept in bachelor groups away from the females, in a separated area in the natural environment of flood plains. Infantile period ended at approximately 14.4 mo of age. Sexual interst and breeding capability first appeared between the ages of 15.6 to 27.5 mo. The transition from prepuberal to postpuberal histological stage, occurred at approximately 27.8 mo of age. All animals were in the postpuberal period at 38.5 mo of age. Daily sperm production estimated with testicle homogenate, at 38.5 mo of age was low (1.4603 +- 0.48x10 sperm) and serum testosterone levels were similar to adult levels by 27.8 mo. In conclusion the 2 y old Pantaneiro stallions showed full sexual behavior and had adult testosterone levels, but at this age, the stage of development of the seminuiferous epithelium was variable and the efficiency of sperm production was still low. |
