Three species of Brachiaria (B. brizantha, B. decumbens and B. humidicola) and Panicum maximum are amongst the most important and widely cultivated forage grasses in the Tropical America, used mainly for dairy and beef cattle production. Molecular markers are considered constant landmarks in the genome. Random amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD) (WILLIAMS et al., 1990; WELSH; McCLELLAND, 1990) is the simplest and fastest DNA-based technique for genetic diversity studies. A number of scientists have used RAPD markers in genetic diversity studies in several species of plants, including forage grasses (CHIARI et al., 2007; PEREIRA et al., 2008; CASA et al., 2002). In this study, RAPD markers were used to access the similarity/dissimilarity among some of the most important commercial cultivars of the Panicum maximum and Brachiaria spp. and in some superior hybrids from breeding programs conduced by Embrapa Beef Cattle. |
