This experiment was conducted with samples from northern Mato Grosso, Brazil, to study the relationships among levels of mineral in soil, forage, and animal tissues during two seasons of the year and to study the effect of higher and lower elevations on mineral concentrations in soils and plants. Soil characteristics and minerals studied on six farms were pH, organic carbon, exchangeable aluminium, hydrogen, calcium, magnesium and effective cation exchange capacity (ECEC), and double acid extraction, calcium, magnesium, phosphorus, potassium sodium, iron, manganese, zinc, and molybdenum; copper and cobalt were extracted by 0.1 N HC1. The most acid soils had a pH of 4.7, farm 5, followed by slightly acid soils with a pH of 5.8, farm 1, and 5.3, farm 2. Higher values were 6.5, 6.4, and 6.0 for farms 3, 4, and 6, respectively. These relatively high pH values for weathered soils are partially due to the recent burning of the forest vegetation prior to establishing the pastures. Soil pH was positively correlated with soil organic carbon, soil exchangeable calcium, magnesium, and ECEC but it was negatively correlated with soil exchangeable hydrogen and aluminum. Low lwvwls of soil organic carbon, only 1.2 per cent, were found in the soils from farms 2 and 5. Medium levels 1.8, 1.9, and 1.9 per cent were found in the soils from farms 1, 4, and 6, respectively, compared to an adequate level of 2.6 per cent, farm 3. Soil organic carbon was positively correlated with soil exchangeable calcium, magnesium, soil pH, and...
