"Icebox" watermelon (Citrullus lanatus [Thunb.] Matsum. and Nakai) cultivars "Minilee", "Mickylee", and an unreleased line known as Small-seeded Dixielee were compared with the 3 possible F1 hybrids among them in a test in the spring of 1987 at Leesburg. Both early and total yields of hybrids generally ranked higher than their parents. Fruits of the hybrids and their parents were higher in soluble solids than the check cultivars "Sugar Baby" and "New Hampshire Midget" and were generally superior in other fruit quality characteristics. Small-seeded Dixielee was an excellent combiner with "Minilee" and "Mickylee". Based on this test, F1 hybrids of Florida "icebox" lines appear to have considerable potential for production in Florida. |
