Abstract The objective was to estimate the genetic parameters for the cow?s ability to stay in the herd (stayability) until 48 and 54 months of age (STAY48 and STAY54) and up to 36 and 48 months after the first calving (STAY36ac and STAY48ac), and their associations with 305-day milk production (MP305) in the first lactation, age at first calving and first calving interval, from the first three lactations of cows reared in Brazil and born between 1987 and 2006. The covariance components were estimated by bivariate analyses, using the Bayesian approach. The a posteriori distributions of the components of interest were obtained with the Gibbs sampler. Fixed effect of contemporary group, additive and residual random genetic effect, and age of dam as covariate (linear and quadratic) were included in the analyses. Low heritability values were obtained for most traits, except for STAY48ac and MP305. Genetic correlation estimates between age at first calving and stayability traits were high and positive, except for STAY48ac. In addition, we detected genetic correlations between MP305 and STAY36ac and STAY48ac. In conclusion, we can infer that genetic correlations between MP305, and STAY36ac and STAY48ac indicate that the current focus on selection of animals for improved milk production in the first lactation can lead to genetic gains on longevity, although not expressive. |

Abstract: With the increase in mechanical harvesting of sugarcane, alternative uses for the remaining straw have been developed. These uses can affect positively or negatively the current production system. Thus, this study aims to evaluate the decomposition of different levels of sugarcane straw of the CTC 14 variety, in first ratton, in the city of Iracemápolis, state of Sao Paulo. The residue levels studied were 25, 50, 75 and 100%, corresponding to 3100, 6150, 9150 and 12300 kg ha-1, divided in to random blocks, with four replications. To evaluate the decomposition there were used the method of decomposition bags (litter bags) with regular collections at 0, 68, 123, 249 and 283 days after field installation, allowing the monitoring of the dry mass (kg ha-1) and remaining decay (%). There were used the exponential model to calculate the constant of decomposition k (day-1) and half-life of the residue (t½). After that, the data were subjected to analysis of variance and regression. The exponential model for all treatments was adjusted, with significant differences for the k among the levels studied, with the 25% (3100 kg ha-1) of being the one with the slowest decomposition. Both k and the remaining mass rate showed quadratic behavior, with gradual increase of decomposition up to level 75% (9150 kg ha-1) and with half-life of 191 days, followed by a slight decrease (not significant) after this. It concludes that the behavior of the decomposition of the straw of CTC 14 variety is influenced by the initial amount of the residue deposited at harvest. In the first ratoon, the increase in the decomposition rate is quadratic and it slows down after the limit of 75% (9150 kg ha-1) of straw. At the end of the cycle the decomposition reaches the breakdown value of 59% for the 75% level (9150 kg ha-1) and 49% (3100 kg ha-1) for 25% of straw, under the conditions at Iracemápolis, state of Sao Paulo.
