The relationship between the characteristics of the habitat and the structure of any community of fish has been demonstrated by several authors. In order to verify whether this relationships exists at lower levels of organisation, an analysis was made of sub-units of a tropical forested creek whose hydrogeological characteristics produce a particularly stable ecosystem. The aquatic habitat was subdivided into five types of microhabitats, classified according to the following variables: aquatic vegetation, velocity of current, organic material in the substratum, depth and incident light. The associations of fish found in each microhabitat were analysed separately. It is suggested that the higly significant structural differences which were verified are a consequence of the different patterns of habitats selection and habitat use which were observed in different species of fish. A positive correlation is shown between the complexity of the habitat and three structural parameters of the associations: diversity (r = 0,71; P<0.001) species richness (r = 0.70; P<0.001) and equitability (r = 0.61; P<0.005). |
