Science has a critical role to play in guiding more sustainable development trajectories. Here, we present the Sustainable Amazon Network (Rede Amazônia Sustentável, RAS): a multidisciplinary research initiative involving more than 30 partner organizations working to assess both social and ecological dimensions of land-use sustainability in eastern Brazilian Amazonia. The research approach adopted by RAS offers three advantages for addressing land-use sustainability problems: (i) the collection of synchronized and co-located ecological and socioeconomic data across broad gradients of past and present human use; (ii) a nested sampling design to aid comparison of ecological and socioeconomic conditions associated with different land uses across local, landscape and regional scales; and (iii) a strong engagement with a wide variety of actors and non-research institutions. Here, we elaborate on these key features, and identify the ways in which RAS can help in highlighting those problems in most urgent need of attention, and in guiding improvements in land-use sustainability in Amazonia and elsewhere in the tropics. We also discuss some of the practical lessons, limitations and realities faced during the development of the RAS initiative so far. |

O objetivo deste trabalho foi caracterizar morfologica, fisica e quimicamente e classificar os solos de tres areas de restinga do litoral norte fluminense sob diferentes coberturas vegetais. O local Lagoa do Robalo (LGR) possui perfis de Podzol Hidromorfico com um horizonte espodico de acumulacao de material humico. No canto do Santo Antonio (CSA) estao compreendidas areias pouco diferenciadas, classificadas como Areias Quartzosas Marinhas intermediarias para Podzol, assim adjetivadas para realcar o debil processo de acumulo subsuperficial de material fino e de materia organica. Em Campos Novos (CNO), os perfis de Podzois com horizonte subsuperficial espodico de acumulacao de material oxidico associado a materia organica sao bem diferenciados. Na LGR, os perfis de Podzois Hidromorficos ocorrem como funcao da conjuncao do material de origem inerte e poroso; da prsenca permanente de um lencol freatico flutuante proximo a superficie; e da vegetacao nativa arbustiva. No CSA, os perfis de Areias Quartzosas Marinhas intermediarias para o Podzol, com excecao do horizonte superficial, poucas e tenues diferencas foram impostas pela troca da cobertura vegetal nativa pelo uso agricola. Em CNO o perfil sob pasto esta drasticamente despodzolizado. A exuberancia do horizonte Bshx do perfil sob cobertura vegetal nativa e extremamente influenciada pelo eficiente dessecamento imposto pelo consumo de agua da floresta local. |
