Storage root (SR) formation in cassava is an important trait related to starch accumulation and quality. To better understand cassava storage root development our research is focusing on the pattern of tissue differentiation during the raising in root diameter. Storage root morphology (root diameter), root anatomy and differential gene expression are being studied. Changing in root diameter was, first used to diffferentiate stages of SR formation. However, no distinct developmental stage based on root morphology could possible be established. Anatomical observation with different tissue stains revealed the same tissue pattern in five SR diameters. Cambium activity and radial dislocation were observed as SR was being formed. Proportion of different specializing tissues such as phelloderm and derived secondary xylem, varied with the raise of SR diameter. |
