Soil acidity is a process which leads to leaching of important plant mineral nutrients from de root zone. Paralell to nutrient deficiency there is an increase of Al- concentration in the soil solution restricting crop growth. In spite of the fact that liming acid soils is often not feasible, it is still considered to be an efficient measure. hence, aluminium- tolerant plants seem to be a propitius solution to soil Al- toxicity. Improvement of the soil humus status could be a further alternative for long-term neutralization of Al- toxicity. This is of utmost importance considering the fact that the quality and quantity of the soil organic matter can locally be improved through crop rotation and green manuring. In order to identify basic influences of organic matter on Al- toxicity to maize a sand culture experiment was conducted with four Al- treatments (0, 25, 50 and 75 mg Al/L) combined with four levels of peat mixed to the sand (0.0, 0.5, 1.5, and 3.0% peat). Increasing Al- concentrations in the nutrient solution in most cases resulted in a significant growth reduction of shoots and roots. Peat treatments clearly diminished these Al- toxicity effects. Al- concentrations in shoots were hardly influenced by various treatments. Al- contents in maize roots were augmented more than tenfolds with increasing Al- concentration of the nutrient solution in peat free treatments.
