This research reports the terrestrial slug Meghimatium pictum (Stoliczka, 1873) (Stylommathophora: Philomycidae) as an agricultural pest for the fi rst time in Southern Brazil vineyards. The species was found in densities exceeding 20 slugs.m-2 in Vitis labrusca L. vineyards at six municipalities of the Southern Brazil?s viticulture region. It causes damage a loss by leaving residual mucus on grapes and by consuming grapes already perforated by other organisms, such as insects or birds, or mechanically damaged by in situ compression. The effectiveness of iron phosphate and metaldehyde baits on M. pictum was evaluated in laboratory experiments. Iron phosphate bait was more effective in controlling M. pictum (70%) than metaldehyde bait (15%). |

Embrapa maintains a program for
the improvement and development of
Panicum maximum Jacq. cultivars (syn:
Megathyrsus maximus (Jacq.) B.K.
Simon & S.W.L. Jacobs) with the aim of
diversifying the use of forages in pastu -
res and intensifying animal production in
Brazil. In 2015, cultivar BRS Tamani was
commercially released in partnership with
Unipasto (Association for the Promotion
of Research in Forage Breeding). Cultivar
BRS Tamani is a hybrid of P. maximum
that meets the demand for a cultivar of
short height, easy to manage and resis -
tant to spittlebugs, such as cv. Massai, but
with greater nutritive value. BRS Tamani
was selected based on agronomic and
morphological evaluations carried out
at Embrapa Beef Cattle, with emphasis initially on its short height, abundance of
tillers, forage yield, regrowth vigor, thin le-
aves, forage nutritive value and resistan-
ce to spittlebugs. In regional trials in the
states of Acre, Rondônia, Mato Grosso
do Sul, Rio de Janeiro, Rio Grande do Sul
and the Federal District, cv. BRS Tamani
showed high adaptation with good agro-
nomic performance and forage yield in all
evaluated sites, except on waterlogged
soils. Under grazing in the Cerrado of the
Federal District, the cultivar showed good
establishment, high persistence, and
high animal performance in the dry and
rainy seasons of the year. This cultivar is
easier to manage since its shorter size
and higher proportion of leaves presents
less fibrous and softer stems than the
traditional tall cultivars. The lack of short
high tillering cultivars with better animal
performance than cultivar Massai and
adapted to medium to high fertility soils
and to shading and easier and flexible
to manage under grazing make this cul-
tivar an important alternative to diversify
pasture areas in Brazil. This publication
is in line with goals 1, 2, 3 and 8 of the
