Soybean is a major cash crop in the tropical areas of South America. Adapted productive cultivars allow planting of soybean in latitudes ranging from 30o. to 0o. S. The understanding of the plant photoperiod response followed by the introduction of the late flowering under short day conditions characteristics into Southern US cultivars played an essential role in developing such cultivars. Today, breeding concentrates on improving yield and stability through yield increase per se, reduced photoperiod sensitivity, resistance to main diseases and tolerance to insects and acid soil. Cultivars with adequate levels of seed germination and vigor after harvesting and storage under less than optimal conditions are also desirable. |
